Compound Shapes

This tutorial will show you how to make new shapes by cutting them out of other shapes. I'm going to make a moon shape and a petal shape from two circles.

Step 1

Make a circle (or any other shape) in whatever color you want using the Shape tool .

Step 2

Add another circle on top of it, making sure they overlap. Select both shapes you just made by clicking on the Selection Tool and dragging your mouse over both shapes. Then go to Object > Group.

Step 3

Go to Window > Pathfinder and click Divide (bottom left).

Step 4

Go to Object > Ungroup and click outside of the circles. They should now be split up into a few different shapes.
