Gradients

This tutorial will show you how to use gradients in Illustrator.

Step 1

First make sure the window with the gradient options is showing up. If it's not go to Window > Gradient.

Step 2

Choose one of the colors you want for your gradient and make it the fill color. Drag it over to the Swatches window. Or you could just choose preset colors from the swatches.

Click on the color square and drag it over to the Gradients window. Drop it on the left side of the gradient. Do the same for the second color you want to use in your gradient. It should look something like this.

Step 3

Add a shape or text and the gradient should show up on the inside. You can experiment with gradient settings to get different effects. Linear gradients will go horizontally, vertically, or at whatever angle you choose. Radial gradients are rounded.
