Making Fonts

This tutorial will show you how to make your own fonts. It takes a lot of time and patience to make and edit all of the characters so I wouldn't recommend trying to make one if you get impatient :P

Step 1

On a blank white piece of paper draw out the alphabet in capital and lowercase letters, and the other symbols from your keyboard, using a black marker. Leave enough space between the letters so that they aren't connected. Scan the paper and open it in your graphics program. Here's what one of my scanned letters looks like:

Step 2

Download and install the 30 day free trial of FontCreator 5.6.

Step 3

Open FontCreator and go to File > New. Name your font whatever you want where it says Font Family Name. Select Unicode (characters) and Regular.

You should see a lot of boxes that look like this. Double click on the capital A.

Step 4

Go to your scanned image and crop out the letter A. Press Ctrl+C to copy it. Go back to FontCreator and press Ctrl+V to paste. You should get something like this:

Step 5

Make the letter bigger by putting your mouse over the top right corner square and dragging it out. Make sure your letter stays to the right and above the red line (unless it's a letter that goes below the baseline, like a lowercase g or y). For lowercase letters, make the top of the letter touch the x-height line.

Step 6

Drag the dashed line over to the left so it matches up with the dashed line to the right of your letter. This fixes the spacing between letters.

Step 7

If you want to edit your letter, click on the point mode button and click and drag the squares on your letter. Repeat steps 4-7 for all of the other letters, punctuation, etc. To test your font, press F5 and type whatever you want. When you're done, save your font and go to Font > Install to use it.
