Scribbles

This tutorial will show you how to make scribbles using a scan. You can use any program with a brush tool.

Step 1

Find a picture you want to use as a reference. I'm using this scan from my scans page.

Step 2

Open the image in whatever program you're using. Create a new image next to it. Click on the brush tool, and make sure you're using a 1px brush with 100% hardness. Using the scan as a reference, scribble an outline. Scribble once over the outline, then go back and scribble again one or two times. Since you're scribbling and not drawing, you don't have to erase if it doesn't look neat.

Step 3

Use the flood fill tool to fill in the scribble with lighter shades of color. Make sure your lines are closed, or the background will get filled as well.

Step 4

Use the flood fill tool to fill in any white pixels in your outline. Also add any other small details, like the seeds on the strawberry.

Step 5

Pick a color that's darker than your fill color, and use it to add shadows.

Step 6

Add some highlights. I like to use dots to add extra highlights.

Make your scribble transparent and save. I also animated mine and made it blink.
